$50.00

They were driving home from a party, she and he and his friend. They spoke Italian to each other, excluding her. The friend hot out and he took the wheel. Seconds later his phone rang. “Cinquanta? Cinquanta dollari.” She wondered how little Italian they thought she knew. Fifty bucks they had said. That’s how much the job paid. But what was the job? Why did it pay so little, and why would they only speak about it in Italian while she was in earshot?

Angelo's knuckles whitened as his grip on the wheel grew tighter. They were speeding away from the embassy, on a route she did not know. He glanced up at her in the rear view mirror, and she noticed the scar again. He had never really explained the scar, or much of his previous life to her.

He'd always seemed so charming, so polite. he'd never made a wrong move in the short time they'd known each other. Was this by design? Had their meeting been an accident? She looked at him and smiled warmly remembering something someone had once said to her "Keep your friends close, and your enemies closer."

As the car was crossing the bridge over Lake Solohan, he pulled over, stopped and turned to look at her. "Do you trust me?" She nodded, even though she felt a little uneasy at this point. He reached into his suit pocket and pulled out a gun. He pointed it at her, smiled and nonchalantly said, "Get out." She climbed out of the car and turned to face him. He was still pointing the gun. "Wait here for an old yellow Chrysler to come by. When they pass wave them down and ask for a ride to Parnalus Canyon. And make sure to tell them your name is Phyllis Keating." He handed her the gun and drove off.

She got out. and stood there in the dark watching as the clouds swept over the moon darkening the sky. The wind kicked up and she listened as the sound of her heart pounding mingled with the sound of the wind. She shivered, but not because she was scared she didn't have time to be scared. She saw headlights in the distance. and she craned her neck to see, but the cars were silver, or blue or white. She tried not to look into the eyes of the passengers in the cars that passed, she didn't want to be recognozed. Then she heard a car coming up the road. there were no headlights. It pulled up beside her and a beaded man rolled down the driver's side window. "Hi, I'm Phyliis Keating, are you going to Parnalus Canyon?" He nodded and she heard the rear door lock click. She got in.

That's when it got interesting. If Simone thought that this night was terrifying enough, the huge black dog in the front seat staring at her was enough to make her want to spring out of the moving car, and roll down the ravine on the side of the road. "How did I get into this?" she asked herself as she checked the door to see how she'd get out if she found the nerve.

The driver stroked his long white beard and chuckled, not even glancing in Simone's direction. "Don't mind chou-chou," he rasped, "he hasn't had his dinner yet and you're the tastiest thing in the car." With that, he broke out into a deep belly laugh causing the car to swerve. He snickered, "I trust that gun you've hidden so poorly is loaded?"

It is, but it doesn't matter. I have othe weapons at my disposal. "Come, Sweets!" the enormous Rotweiler leapt over the seat to sit beside her and began licking her face. "Aww, there's a good boooooy yes, mama missed yoooou." The astonished driver nearly drove off the road. "Thanks for pet-sitting, I hope he wasn't too much trouble.Simone realized the driver's hands weren't on the wheel. "You know, if I were you I really wouldn't, I have a gun, I have a dog who likes me more than you, and dog treats. You have only one bargaining chip: your ability to drive, and you'll go where I tell you to. She patted the seat beside her and the dog sat behind the driver drooling down his neck. "Guard, Sweetie." She held the gun to the driiver's temple. "Listen carefully, she said.

"Here's the sequence: one, Caravel, seventeen, fudgie the whale, cookiepuss eleven. Got that?" She didn't wait for an answer. She rubbed the gun into his neck, just below his Adam's Apple. His foot hit the brakes. She ran her tongue along the rim of his ear then whispered, "Next time I'll kill you slowly." She pushed the gun into his ribs this time, and he understood enough to get out of the car with his hand up. She looked him up and down, then quietly, pityingly, spoke. "Marcel, Marcel, Marcel, do you remember the sequence?." He looked up and nodded yes. She spat at him and drove away.
